Marian Lee

Marian Lee

A carte-de-visite portrait of a sitter identified as Marian Lee, a courtesan or successful prostitute. Stylistically the portrait resembles several others produced by the same studio around the same time, all of which depict well-known courtesans of the day. The Mary Evans Picture Library has an album of portraits of courtesans assembled by an unidentified connoisseur towards the end of the 1860s. Marian (or Marion) Lee's portrait appears in that album; according to an inscription in the lower margin, she was also known as 'Baby Thornhill'.

Photographed by Elliott and Fry of 55, Baker Street, London.
