Burmese convert

An extensive caption printed on the reverse of the mount identifies the sitter as Moung Thanbyah, born in September 1841. He apparently converted at the age of 12 and was baptized by Poh Qua, a native pastor. 'He studied three years at the Government school at Rangoon, and then came to this country with Mrs. Ingalls, and entered Shurtleff College, at Upper Alton, Illinois, October, 1865.... He is preparing for the ministry of the Gospel among his own people.'

Photographed by the Murphy Brothers of Alton, Illinois.
