'Negro Mussulman'

A very fine carte-de-visite portrait of North African Muslim. A pencilled inscription on the reverse of the mount reads ‘Negro Mussulman / Desert Species’.

The word ‘Musulman’ as a synonym for ‘Muslim’ is now obsolete in English, but it is still an acceptable word in many languages for a Muslim, including French, Spanish, Turkish and Bosnian.

Photographer unidentified.
